Research into Film Trailer

We really like the idea of creating a film trailer and being able to tell a story. We discussed how we would like to be able to have some really artistic shots and combine it with some scenes filled with dialogue.

This trailer shows a lot of dialogue scenes and is good because there is only two main actors in it so it would be easy to arrange a time to shoot. I also like the fact it tells a story throughout the trailer without really giving away the big story lines which is what a  trailer is designed for.

These trailers are all quite realistic and don't feature a lot of special effects in them which means it would be good for us to produce something of this genre (Comedy/RomCom) as they don't often have a lot of effects which we couldn't reproduce. These feature quite a few of dialogue scenes which we would include to show some of the storyline without giving out major plot lines.

Main task

We looked at and discussed all the briefs for our main task. Finally we decided it would come down to either brief 1 - A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video. Or brief 2 -A promotion package for  a new film, to include a trailer, Or A promotion package for a new computer.video game.

We came to the conclusion that these tasks would play to our strengths as a group and we'd be able to create something great. So we decided to research further into both tasks to decide which task we want to do and what tasks we could reproduce at the best of our ability.

Research into Computer/Video Game

We really like this trailer because there are some really good artistic shots which would be really interesting to shoot.

Here are a selection of video game trailers, we all decided that if we were to choose this brief that we would choose an action video game. This would be a good genre for us as we all play these types of games and could do further research into the marketing and advertising for these products. Although we don't have the software which would enable us to produce the visual effects for these games we could create one abit more realistic.

Here is the storyboard which we created to picture our scenes beforehand and have a vision before actually shooting them.

Improvements

For our main task we discussed several features which could be improved to make our main task better. Firstly we decided to properly discuss our locations and choose better areas which would reflect better upon our film. We also wanted to make sure we use chosen costumes and proper rather than what we had on or what we had in had. This will make sure our film is more professional. We also want to take longer when shooting and editing as we felt we were rushed abit as we only had a short amount of time to finish this task, taking longer will ensure that there are no continuity errors and that the transitions are more fluid.

Group Feedback For Pre-Lim

We showed our trailer to the class group and asked for feedback. Here are some good points and not so good points to our video from the feedback we received.

Good

  • Continuity
  • Voice Over
  • Visual Effects

Not so good
  • No backing music
  • Some bad transitions
  • Can be slow at times

Overall the class thought our trailer was good and mimicked the "A Walk Among The Tombstones Trailer" well.

iMovie Screenshots

Here are some screen shots from our work with iMovie, as non of us had used the software before we decided to all be co-editors so we could discuss different ideas and learn how to use the software.

Firstly we trimmed our film, this was useful as we deleted all the unnecessary parts of the film.

Secondly we added transitions to our film between scenes, mainly we used fade to black as there was alot of time different and change of scene in our clips so we thought that was best to represent the lapse of time.
Next we added voice overs and sound effects, this adds to the overall viewer opinion of the film. It attracts the audience and keeps them watching.

We also added a filter onto the entirety of the film this was because we had taken inspiration from the actual trailer which used a filter to make the film seem darker.

A Walk Among The Tombstones Task

Roles
We allocated ourselves different roles during our short film project. Due to the groups being so small we decided that it would be best to have multi-roles as it was easier to do several jobs as we only had a short period of time.
I was the camera-girl, the co-editor and the storyboard creator. Along with the other members who were the actors, props people, and co-editors.

Location
For the location we decided to do it around school as it was the easiest option as we only had a finite amount of time to finish this project. We chose the staircase in the science block as it allowed us to do an overhead shot, a business room as there was a desk and windows which brought light, we also used a seated area in the entrance to the building.

Pre-Lim Film Task

For the pre-lim task our group (Me, Max & Kyle) has decided to create a mimic of a famous film trailer. The film trailer we have chosen is "A Walk Among The Tombstones". We chose this film trailer because we liked the story it told, and we thought in the time we had we could create a few scenes from it.

We viewed the trailer and made notes of what we enjoyed about it and how we could create scenes based upon that:

  • The voice over, the main actor in the trailer was also doing a voice over, this is a great way to tell a story as well as through the film itself. We enjoyed this as we could follow what was happening and decided we should put this feature in our trailer.
  • The dark film effect, there was a dark film effect throughout the trailer. We enjoyed this feature and noticed that it made the scenes more intense and darker and thought it would be a good idea to put this throughout our scenes.
  • We also enjoyed the transitions throughout the trailer they all faded one into the next and this was a clear and fluid transition.
